Apparently moving is going to cost a lot more than just the price of a house

I found out this weekend that renting a 24' U-Haul to drive from Southern California to Seattle with the car tow cost $5,300!!

Five-three-zero-zero.

Dollars.

Everyone is moving out of California and this has created a shortage of moving vehicles in California.

Not that I have any idea when we might be moving because I'm STILL waiting to hear back about my third interview.

Could you rent one from somewhere else (like, say, Las Vegas, which should have an excess of moving trucks) then double-back? You could make a weekend of it!

It's not much help now but you can write it off on your taxes next year.

Richard,

Thanks, but I think the cost of gas and the expense of getting out there, etc. might just drive it up to about the same range. My mother-in-law is moving this weekend and is using a storage container company that provides actual movers to take everything down the stairs (yay!) and it's only $2900, so maybe that's the way to go...

Eden,

I think the only thing that will keep me going is the fact that I can write off A LOT on our taxes the year we move. And we all know how much I love doing taxes.
